In the early stages of development, the game was in an active testing phase. Developers constantly experimented, adding new blocks just to test building mechanics. The sponge had no physical properties — it was simply a fun cube with a unique texture, used exclusively for decoration by builders.

Rumors and Myths of Early Versions

Like any item without a clear purpose, the sponge quickly became surrounded by legends. On gaming forums, rumors circulated that it was a secret block that could only be found under special conditions or crafted from rare materials.

Gamers created theories and hoped that in the future, the sponge would be able to filter water or create safe underwater tunnels. Some players even believed in the existence of a hidden crafting recipe, although it never actually existed.

Reasons for Changes and the Long-Awaited Functionality

A true revolution for this block occurred in 2014 with the release of the Minecraft 1.8 update. Massive underwater structures — Ocean Monuments — were added to the game, along with new enemies.

Players urgently needed an effective way to drain large underwater areas for exploration and base building. Developers addressed this need and decided to give the forgotten sponge functionality. This made it a valuable resource and an excellent reward for clearing dangerous underwater fortresses.

How the New System Works

The sponge is now an incredibly useful tool. Place it near water, and it instantly absorbs liquid within a radius of several blocks, turning into a «wet sponge». After that, it stops working until you dry it.

Developers added two convenient ways to restore the sponge’s properties:

• Place the wet sponge in a furnace and use any fuel.
• Place the block in the Nether, where the high temperatures instantly evaporate the water.

This valuable resource can only be obtained in Survival Mode in Ocean Monuments: by defeating Elder Guardians or finding special secret rooms completely filled with sponges.
