“Fortune” on the blades: wool lottery or waste of time? In Minecraft

Hey everyone! I want to share a true Minecraft investigation that’s been on my mind for a while. I’ve often seen the question: “If you enchant shears with Fortune, will sheep drop more wool?” First thought — what if it works?! And so — the big experiment day arrived!

Setting the stage: prep for the experiment

I like doing things properly, so I started by building a cozy pen for my test sheep. Two pairs of shears: a regular one and a shiny “Fortune III.” Notebook at hand — to log the results.

Expectations were sky-high. I was already picturing a wool empire and a separate room just for chests. First run — ten sheep with regular shears. Jotted it down, sighed, grabbed the second — “Fortune III,” and the same ten sheep ready for a new look.

Moment of truth: magic or letdown?

Guess what? Dramatic pause, wool count... and it’s a normal day! Exactly the same amount dropped — not a single extra fiber. I even chuckled: talk about a Minecraft marketing move! I expected fireworks and got bubbles of disappointment.

My honest take: if Fortune worked on shears, it would break the game’s balance! Imagine how much wool every farmer would stack. Likely the devs kept this “old-school” on purpose.

Pros and cons of putting Fortune on shears

Pros (sadly, only in theory):

• Expectation: chance of more wool per sheep.
• Experiment thrill — you’ll be the first on the server to try!
• Chance to run your own test and see in practice.

Cons (fully confirmed by testing):

• Wool amount doesn’t increase at all, regardless of Fortune level.
• You waste XP and books — no payoff.
• Inner disappointment and shaken faith in game “miracles” (half-joking, but still!).
• You might burn the enchant where it truly helps — a pickaxe would be ideal.

MythBuster corner: is it worth trying?

My verdict as a tester and mechanics nerd — a clear “no”! As nice as the idea sounds, Fortune on shears doesn’t affect sheep wool. You’ll get exactly the same as with basic shears. Save your XP for something genuinely useful! Honestly, the experiment itself was more fun than the outcome.
