  • Allay: Minecraft’s cutest mob that does all the dirty work for you

Imagine this: you’re building your base while a tiny blue helper zips around the area, gathers the resources you need, and drops them right at your feet. That’s exactly how the Allay works — a tiny flying mob without which it’s hard to imagine a well-designed farm.

Allay: Minecraft’s cutest mob that does all the dirty work for you

Meet the Allay: the blue spirit that works for you

The Allay is a peaceful mob with translucent wings and a soft blue glow. It never attacks or runs away — quite the opposite, it happily follows you like a loyal pet. But behind its cute look hides a real hard worker: give it any item, and it will instantly go searching for more of the same. That’s what makes the Allay one of Minecraft’s most powerful automation tools.

Born from a vote: how players brought the Allay into the game

At Minecraft Live 2021, Mojang held a real election: players had to choose one of three candidates — the Allay, the Copper Golem, or the Glare. The vote was heated, but the result was convincing: the Allay took 54.3% of the vote. In 2022, it joined the game as part of Update 1.19, “The Wild Update”. The Allay is a mob the community itself voted into existence. And judging by its usefulness, that choice was the right one.

Allay behind bars: where to find your helper

The Allay doesn’t just wander the world freely — you have to find and free it. There are only two places to look:

  • Woodland Mansions — deep in the dark forest hides a gloomy structure, and inside it are prison cells holding Allays. Mansions are rare, which makes the find even more valuable.

  • Pillager Outposts — wooden cages near the outpost walls. These are far more common than mansions, so this is the best place to start your search.

Break the cage — and the Allay is free. No conditions, no special items. One hit, and your loyal companion is ready to work.

Flying courier: how the Allay turns chaos into order

It’s simple: hand the Allay an item, and it becomes a devoted courier. It takes off, scans the area, collects what you need, and brings it back to you. At a time, it works with only one type of item — the one you gave it as a sample.

And that’s where the real magic begins. The Allay is irreplaceable on farms with “tricky” items: Totems of Undying, tridents, enchanted books — everything that won’t stack and turns hoppers into a headache. Where a regular redstone setup can take hours to tune, the Allay handles it elegantly and with no extra effort.

It dances, duplicates, and loves music: all the Allay’s secrets

Thought the Allay was just a courier? Not so fast. It has a few quirks of its own:

  • A note block is its beacon: when it hears a note block, the Allay flies to it and drops the collected items nearby. The effect lasts about 30 seconds — many redstone builds rely on this.
  • Turn on a jukebox — the Allay dances: if music starts playing nearby, the little worker drops everything and starts dancing. That’s not a bug, that’s personality.
  • The breeding secret: give the Allay an amethyst shard while it’s dancing near a jukebox, and it will duplicate itself. It’s the only way to get more Allays without hunting for new outposts.

  • A lead is for moving: you can leash the Allay and bring it to a new location. Just don’t go too fast — the lead can snap.

Small size, huge value

The Allay is living proof that the most powerful things can hide behind a modest appearance. Add it to your farm, start the conveyor — and there’s no going back. The community sensed that even at the voting stage. And anyone who has ever built a system with an Allay will say the same thing: it fully earned that trust.
