Hello, adventurers! On June 17, 2025, the long-awaited Minecraft 1.21.6 update, titled "Chase the Skies," was released. This "game drop" not only adds new content but also brings significant changes to the way you travel and interact with the world. Let’s dive into what this sky-themed update has brought and how it will transform your gameplay experience.

Main Feature: Conquer the Skies with the Happy Ghast!

The centerpiece of the update is a new friendly mob — the Happy Ghast. Unlike its aggressive counterpart from the Nether, this ghast will be your loyal companion and the first true multiplayer flying transport in vanilla Minecraft.

The process of obtaining it is an adventure in itself:

Welcome Minecraft 1.21.6 "Chase the Skies": A New Perspective on the Skies and Beyond

  • Find or craft a "Dried Ghast". This block can be found near fossils in the Soul Sand Valley or obtained through bartering with piglins. It can also be crafted using 8 ghast tears and 1 soul sand block.

  • Revive it. Place the block in water to start a hydration process that takes about 20 minutes. Gradually, the block will "come to life," and eventually, a small Ghastling will appear.

  • Raise your pet. Feed the Ghastling snowballs to speed up its growth. After some time, it will transform into an adult Happy Ghast.

With a special harness (crafted from leather, glass, and wool), you can ride the ghast and bring up to three friends along. This opens up incredible opportunities for co-op world exploration, building high-altitude bases, or simply enjoying fun flights above the clouds.

Multiplayer Enhancements: Locator Panel

Playing with friends has become more convenient thanks to the "Locator Panel," a new interface element. It replaces the experience bar (the level remains visible) and shows colored markers indicating the direction of other players. Arrows will tell you if your teammates are above or below you. No more getting lost in deep caves or endless plains! This feature can be disabled in world settings if you prefer the classic experience.

Quality Changes: New Recipes and Mechanics

"Chase the Skies" introduces important changes that players have long requested:

  • Saddle crafting: Finally! You can now craft a saddle using 3 pieces of leather and 1 iron ingot. No more relying on luck to find them in treasure chests.

  • Leash changes: The leash recipe has been simplified (now requiring only string), and its mechanics have been significantly expanded. You can now link mobs into caravans, tether boats, and even use shears to carefully cut the leash from a specific mob.

  • New music and sounds: The game’s atmosphere is enriched with 5 new music tracks by Amos Roddy, which will play in different biomes. A new music disc, "Tears," has also been added, obtainable by killing a hostile ghast with a reflected fireball.

Graphical Transformation: "Vibrant Visuals"

For Bedrock Edition players (on supported devices), a new graphical mode called "Vibrant Visuals" is now available. It adds dynamic lighting, realistic shadows, water reflections, and volumetric fog, making the Minecraft world even more stunning. Developers promise to bring this feature to Java Edition in the future.

What Does This Mean for Players?

The 1.21.6 "Chase the Skies" update is not just a set of new content but a step toward a deeper and more social gameplay experience. The ability to fly with friends changes the dynamics of world exploration, and small but important improvements, like saddle crafting, make survival more logical and less dependent on chance. This update encourages cooperation and rewards exploration, offering both new goals and tools to achieve them.
