![Minecraft Stronghold Library: Everything You Need to Know]()
The stronghold is one of the most atmospheric and mysterious structures in Minecraft. Twisting corridors, dark rooms, and unexpected traps turn exploring it into a real adventure. But among all its rooms, the library holds a special place — a spacious hall filled with bookshelves, cobwebs, and loot chests. That’s exactly what we’ll talk about today: what it is, where to find it, what it’s for, and what you can get from it.

What is a stronghold library?
The library is one of the special rooms that can generate inside a stronghold. It stands out from the other rooms thanks to its size and design.
There are two types of library:
- Small — a one-story room with bookshelves along the walls.
- Large — a two-story version with a balcony, stairs, and far more blocks.
The structure is made of stone bricks (including mossy and cracked variants), oak planks, oak fences, and torches. The space is heavily covered in cobwebs, which slow movement and give the room a truly abandoned look. The large version of the library contains 233 bookshelves — when broken, they yield up to 699 books.
Where can you find a stronghold library?
Before you can reach the library, you first need to find the stronghold itself. You can do this with an Eye of Ender: throw it into the air and follow it — it points toward the nearest stronghold. Strongholds are usually located 1,000 to 3,000 blocks away from the spawn point, though this depends on the specific seed.
Once inside the stronghold, be ready to wander a bit. The library generates randomly and can appear in different parts of the structure — sometimes right near the entrance, sometimes deep within the maze of corridors. Look for wide doorways and pay attention to the interior: bookshelves and cobwebs stand out clearly against the stone walls. Interestingly, in rare cases part of the library can generate above ground — one of the known world-generation anomalies.

What is a stronghold library useful for?
The library is more than just a nice-looking room. It has several practical uses.
A source of bookshelves. Bookshelves are needed to improve an enchanting table. To unlock the highest-level enchantments, you need to place 15 bookshelves around the table. A stronghold library is one of the richest sources of this block in the game, especially if you find the two-story version.
A source of books and paper. Breaking each bookshelf without the «Silk Touch» enchantment gives you 3 books. Books are useful for crafting a book and quill (for enchantments) and for other recipes.
An atmospheric building spot. If you enjoy building RPG bases or themed dungeons, a stronghold library is a great foundation for creating something special underground.
What can you get from the library?
The main reward for exploring the library is the loot chest, which always generates in this room. Large libraries can contain two chests. Here’s what you’ll usually find inside:
- Enchanted books — the most valuable item. You can find rare enchantments here that are hard to get in other ways.
- Maps — including treasure maps.
- Feathers and paper — useful crafting materials.
- Apples and other food.
- Potions and other random items.
Besides the chests, don’t forget about the cobwebs: they are easy to collect with shears or a sword enchanted with «Looting» and give you string — a valuable resource for crafting leads, bows, and other items.

Is it worth looking for a stronghold library?
Absolutely — yes. A stronghold library combines great atmosphere, useful resources, and a chance for rare loot. Even if the enchanted books in the chest are not the ones you wanted, hundreds of bookshelves and cobwebs definitely won’t go to waste.
Have you already found a library in your world? What did you manage to get from the chests? Share your finds and stories in the comments — it would be interesting to see who got the luckiest!
