Hey everyone, I’m back with my crazy ideas and experiments in the world of Minecraft! Today I had a sudden spark and decided to test a theory that wouldn’t let me rest. It’s one of those ideas that seem brilliant right up until you test them.
The grand experiment: Sponges vs. cauldrons
My first thought was simple and, I thought, genius: “What if I surround water-filled cauldrons with a whole mountain of dry sponges? The water has to go somewhere, evaporate, right?” Honestly, I was almost sure I’d see some cool new animation or at least empty cauldrons. I could already picture the sponges slowly but surely “pulling” the moisture out from within.
I went all in. I lined up several cauldrons and filled them to the brim. Then I started building a full-on fortress of dry sponges around them. From the sides, on top — I spared no resources. The build looked imposing. I stepped back a couple of paces, held my breath… and… nothing. Absolutely nothing. Not the slightest hint of any interaction.

Moment of truth: Epic fail or game logic?
It was really something — an epic fail! I stood there for a minute staring at this static scene: dry sponges and full cauldrons, as if they were mocking me. I was hugely disappointed, since I’d almost believed in my discovery.
But then, once the emotions settled, I thought it through. And you know what — it makes solid game sense. The sponge is a tool for open spaces; it absorbs water blocks. A cauldron is essentially a container, an item that stores a resource inside itself. A sponge can’t just “pull” contents out of another block. That would break basic game mechanics. So my failure actually confirmed how well thought-out everything is.

Pros and cons of sponge–cauldron interaction
Let’s sum up my little study in pros and cons for us players.
Pros:
- Reliable storage. Water in a cauldron is perfectly safe. You can build anything nearby, even whole walls of sponges, and be sure your water supply won’t go anywhere.
- Predictable mechanics. The rules are consistent. Sponges absorb water blocks; buckets take water from cauldrons. No confusion or accidental resource loss.
- Protection from accidents. You won’t accidentally drain your cauldron with potion or water just by placing a sponge nearby to dry a room.
Cons:
- No creative loopholes. It would be fun to have hidden interactions between blocks. This mechanic denies us those “cheesy” inventions.
- A bit boring. Let’s admit it, epic suction of water from a cauldron would look way cooler than total inaction.
