Mojang has released the third snapshot for the upcoming Minecraft 26.2 update. This test version brings not only fixes for old bugs, but also new mechanics that make exploring the underground world even more exciting. The main highlight of this update is Sulfur Spikes, but the patch also includes many useful improvements for builders and data pack creators.

Minecraft 26.2 Snapshot 3: Sulfur Spikes, new textures, and technical improvements

Why these changes matter and how they affect the game

The developers continue to expand the concept of dangerous, atmospheric biomes. Sulfur Caves are gaining a distinct identity, becoming a place where you need to watch not only your step, but also what is above you. The addition of new stalactites and stalagmites makes cave exploration more tactical — now, one careless step or a falling block from above can deal serious damage.

At the same time, the developers are paying major attention to the technical side of the game. Moving to new data pack and resource pack versions, along with changes to the entity predicate format, is a necessary step to optimize the game engine. For regular players, this means fewer lags and bugs; for modders and map makers, it means more flexible and clearer tools to work with.

New dangers: Sulfur Spikes

The main addition in the third snapshot is Sulfur Spikes. These are new blocks that naturally generate on sulfur blocks inside the Sulfur Caves biome.

Here is how they work:

  • Shape depends on placement: Place a spike on the ceiling and it becomes a stalactite. Place it on the ground — and it becomes a stalagmite.
  • Merging: You can stack spikes on top of each other to create long, intimidating formations. If the tips of a stalactite and stalagmite meet, they merge into a single column (unless you hold Shift while placing them).
  • Falling physics: Stalagmites break if the block beneath them is removed. Stalactites fall downward if their support is destroyed.
  • Danger: A falling sulfur stalactite deals damage, and these spikes really are very sharp. They can also be easily knocked down with a well-aimed trident throw.

Visual upgrades and balance changes

Builders will definitely appreciate the visual updates. In this snapshot, the developers refreshed the textures of several blocks at once. Carved Cinnabar, Carved Sulfur, Cinnabar Bricks, Polished Cinnabar, and Sulfur Bricks now look fresher and fit the overall style of the game better.

Crafting has changed as well: the Powerful Sulfur block can no longer be broken back down into regular sulfur blocks. This will make players think more carefully about resource processing.

Mob behavior has also been adjusted. Sulfur Cubes are now trickier — you can no longer just put them in a boat and carry them away. The game’s sound design has also been expanded with new effects for Nautiluses.

Technical details for content creators

Minecraft’s technical foundation has received an important update that will affect all creators of custom content:

  • Data pack version has been updated to 102.0.
  • Resource pack version has been updated to 86.0.
  • The entity predicate format has changed. It now more closely resembles data component maps. All keys in predicates are now identifiers, and unrecognized components are now strictly rejected by the game.
  • A new sub-predicate, minecraft:entity_tags, has been added, making it easy to track entities with specific tags.
  • Beds have received new textures and models for resource packs, and the old block entity minecraft:bed has been removed.

The developers also fixed nearly two dozen bugs. These include leads disappearing when interacting with axolotls in buckets, issues with glowing textures in endermen’s hands, and bugs related to the behavior of Sulfur Cubes and Magma Cubes.
