![Minecraft Update 26w14a: Welcome to HerdCraft!]()
Every year on April 1st, the Minecraft community eagerly awaits surprises from the developers. 2026 was no exception. Mojang Studio released snapshot 26w14a, titled «The Herdcraft Update». This update completely redefines the game, turning the classic sandbox into a crowd management simulator of animated cubes. Let’s dive into what this April Fools’ update brought us, how the new mechanics work, and how they change the gameplay experience.

Why is Mojang changing the rules?
April Fools’ snapshots are a long-standing tradition of Mojang. Developers use this day not only to entertain fans but also to test the craziest concepts that would never make it into the main game. Update 26w14a continues this trend.
Interestingly, this release also standardizes version structure. It’s the first April Fools’ snapshot in a long time to strictly use the YYwWWn naming format (in this case — 26w14a). Developers decided to abandon long joke file names to simplify version navigation while keeping all the chaos within the game itself. The main reason for the current gameplay changes is the desire to solve the eternal «inventory problem» by simply removing it.
How does the new «living blocks» system work?
In HerdCraft, your usual survival mode inventory is disabled. You can no longer store collected resources in your pockets. Instead, all items and blocks in the world have become «living» entities. They behave like mobs: they have health points, can take damage, move, and even fight.
To survive in these conditions, you are given a set of eight special non-removable tools on the quick access bar:
- Punch: A classic tool for attacking and breaking.

- Follow Me: Makes selected blocks follow you on a leash.

- Move: Sends your crowd of blocks to a specified point.

- Attack / Mine: Commands blocks to attack enemies or mine resources.

- Craft and Build: Tools for creating crafting grids (2x2 or 3x3) directly in the world and turning living blocks back into static structures.

- Group / Ungroup and Highlight: Helps distribute blocks into color-coded groups and highlight them for easier management.

Additionally, the game introduces new dangers — Copper Traps and Iron Traps. If eight copper or iron ingots are too close to each other, they automatically turn into a trap capable of catching an unwary player.
Impact on players: from sandbox to strategy
This update radically changes the approach to Minecraft. Instead of the usual building and storing resources in chests, you become a shepherd. The game temporarily turns into a real-time strategy (RTS). You literally need to gather herds of cobblestone, wood, and ore, drive them to the construction site, and command them when encountering creepers.
This approach forces you to think completely differently. How do you craft a pickaxe if planks and sticks scatter in different directions? You have to use the crafting tool, herd the necessary blocks into a glowing grid on the ground, and manually complete the assembly. It’s slow, chaotic, but incredibly fun, especially when playing with friends.
Time to gather the herd
The 26w14a «HerdCraft» update is a brilliant example of Mojang’s creative approach to April Fools’ pranks. Abandoning the classic inventory and turning blocks into obedient (and not-so-obedient) minions offers a completely new, albeit temporary, gameplay experience.
