As mentioned in our article «Explosive Cubes and Geysers: A Detailed Review of Minecraft 26.2 Snapshot 5», the latest update introduced not only new natural phenomena but also unique mob interaction mechanics. One of the most intriguing additions is the third, «Explosive» archetype of the Sulfur Cube. This mechanic radically changes the approach to creating traps, engineering systems, and resource gathering.

What is the Explosive Sulfur Cube?
The explosive archetype is activated when a regular Sulfur Cube absorbs a TNT block. Upon transforming into an Explosive Cube, the mob retains most of its standard properties but gains slightly increased air drag during jumps. A key feature is that while the block is inside the cube, it becomes completely immune to damage from other explosions.
This mob acts as a living, mobile explosive. Unlike static blocks, the cube continues to move, making it an unpredictable element in both combat and automation processes.
Activation Methods and Usage
To use the absorbed TNT, it must be detonated. Developers have provided several activation methods, each affecting the countdown timer (fuse):
- Fire and Redstone: You can activate the cube using redstone, fire sources, or a dispenser with flint and steel. In this case, the time to explosion is exactly 6 seconds.

- Chain Reaction: If the cube is activated by a nearby explosion, its timer becomes random, ranging from 0.75 to 3 seconds.

Once the charge is activated (when the fuse is lit), the Sulfur Cube enters a special phase. It can no longer be picked up with a bucket, becomes completely immune to any damage, and the absorbed TNT block cannot be extracted with shears. Upon explosion, the cube is completely destroyed, leaving no small Sulfur Cubes behind.
Comparison with Regular TNT
Although the Explosive Sulfur Cube uses classic TNT as its base, their mechanics differ significantly. Understanding these differences will help you use both tools more effectively.
Mobility and Physics
Regular TNT is an immobile block until activated. Only after being ignited does it become an entity subject to gravity. The Sulfur Cube, on the other hand, is a mob that moves independently even before detonation. This allows for the creation of self-propelled mines or using cubes to deliver explosives to hard-to-reach places.
Detonation Time
A standard TNT block always explodes 4 seconds after activation. The Explosive Cube offers a more complex system: 6 seconds with direct activation and unpredictable 0.75–3 seconds in a chain reaction. The random timer makes mass explosions involving cubes more chaotic.
Vulnerability and Interaction
Activated TNT can be moved by water currents or pushed by pistons. The Explosive Sulfur Cube in its active state gains complete immunity to damage, eliminating the possibility of destroying it before the explosion with weapons or lava. Additionally, its immunity to explosions (until the fuse is activated) allows for safe storage of such cubes near other explosive objects.
The Explosive Archetype of the Sulfur Cube adds a whole new level of depth to Minecraft's engineering aspect. Whether building complex mechanisms, organizing large-scale excavations, or creating clever traps to protect your base, this mobile explosive opens up unique opportunities for every player.
